Genesis 3:4 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: — Genesis 3:4

Here we see the devil’s lie. Satan moves from questioning God’s Word to directly denying God’s Word.

God had said, “thou shalt surely die.” Satan said, “Ye shall not surely die.”

Now Eve had a choice. Would she believe God or believe the serpent?

Satan was attacking the concept of absolute authority. He was suggesting that God’s Word was not final and that man could decide truth for himself.

Warren Wiersbe said, “A temptation is an opportunity to accomplish a good thing in a bad way.” Passing an exam is a good thing; cheating is a bad way. Paying your bills is a good thing; stealing money is a bad way.

Temptation often offers something that seems desirable, but it always asks us to get it outside the will of God.
