New Every Morning
Pastor Jerry A. BurnsIt is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22-23Lamentations is a book of tears. Jeremiah walked through the ruins of Jerusalem and wrote down what he saw. In chapter three he speaks of “mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.”
Then, right in the middle of the book, he says, “This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.” Nothing around him had changed yet. What changed was what he chose to remember. I need that reminder more than I would like to admit. My hope so often waits for my circumstances to change first.
And this is what he remembered: “It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
God’s mercy is not a supply that runs low by Friday. Yesterday’s mercy was for yesterday. This morning there is a fresh supply waiting for you, made for today’s troubles. I have used up yesterday’s more than once and found this morning’s waiting all the same.
Jeremiah goes on, “The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.” When everything else had been taken from him, he still had the Lord, and the Lord was enough.
I am thankful that I do not have to earn God’s mercy again every morning. I only have to receive it.
What are you carrying into this day? Before you look at the ruins, recall to your mind the faithfulness of God. His mercies are new this morning.
