God, That Cannot Lie
Pastor Jerry A. BurnsIn hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
Titus 1:2Paul opens his letter to Titus with a long first sentence, and tucked inside it is one of the most comforting phrases in the Bible: “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.”
We live in a world full of broken promises. Companies promise more than they deliver. Friends promise to call and never do. I have made promises with the best of intentions and then fallen short of them, and so have you.
But Paul says there is one thing God cannot do. He cannot lie. It is not only that He chooses not to; it is against His very nature. Every promise He has made is as sure as the One who made it. I read that phrase again this morning, and it steadied me.
And notice when He made this one. Eternal life was “promised before the world began.” Before there was a sunrise, before Adam drew his first breath, God had already settled what He would give to those who trust His Son. I love that it was settled before I ever had a chance to earn it or ruin it.
I am thankful my hope of heaven does not rest on how I feel on a Monday morning. Feelings rise and fall, but God’s promise does not move. If you have trusted Christ, your eternal life is as certain as God’s own character.
So what promise of God are you finding hard to believe today? Take Him at His Word. The God who cannot lie has never broken a promise, and He is not going to start with you.
