To the Uttermost
Pastor Jerry A. BurnsWherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
Hebrews 7:25The priests of the Old Testament had one problem they could never solve. They died. “They truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death.” A priest could serve for years, but one day his work stopped.
Then Hebrews says, “But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.” Jesus does not retire, and He does not die. His priesthood will never pass to someone else. That means more to me every year. Every pastor I have known will one day step down. My High Priest never will.
Because of that, look what He is able to do. “Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.” Not partway. To the uttermost. And the reason is that “he ever liveth.” The One who saved you is still alive, and He is still praying for you. When I am too tired to pray well, that line holds me up.
He never had to offer a sacrifice for Himself, as the old priests did. “For this he did once, when he offered up himself.” Once was enough.
I am thankful that my salvation does not rest on a priest who might die, or a feeling that might fade, but on a Saviour who ever liveth.
If He saves to the uttermost, there is no one too far gone, and no believer He will fail to keep.
