Let God Be Magnified
Pastor Jerry A. BurnsLet all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be magnified.
Psalm 70:4When we look through a magnifying glass at a small object, the lens does not change the object itself. Instead, it makes the object appear large so we can see the details we might otherwise miss. That is precisely what the psalmist meant when he wrote, “Let God be magnified.” We cannot make God any bigger than He already is, but we can live our lives in such a way that He appears large to the people around us.
The Apostle Paul understood this principle well. Whether in life or in death, his singular desire was that Christ might be magnified in his body. Paul did not want people looking at his own achievements, his religious background, or his personal strength. He wanted people to see past him and behold the glory of the Saviour. When the Lord is magnified in our lives, our daily routine, our homes, and our church become a window through which others see the goodness of God.
It is easy for the things of this world to crowd out the Lord and make Him look small in our daily living. We magnify our troubles when we worry about them instead of trusting God. We magnify our own opinions when we quarrel instead of seeking peace. But when we walk in fellowship with the Lord, His grace, His mercy, and His holiness are put on display for a watching world.
This ought to be the daily prayer of every Christian. In our families, our speech, and our service, may we decrease so that He might increase. Let us not hide our light under a bushel, but let our lives declare the greatness of our Redeemer.
May God help us to examine our hearts today. Are we drawing attention to ourselves, or are we pointing others to the Saviour? Let us live in such a way that anyone watching our lives will see a great and glorious God.
