A Cloud for a Covering
Pastor Jerry A. BurnsHe spread a cloud for a covering; and fire to give light in the night.
Psalm 105:39Psalm 105 remembers how God brought Israel out of Egypt, and in a few verses it lists what He did for them on the way. “He spread a cloud for a covering; and fire to give light in the night.” In the heat of the desert He gave them shade, and in the dark He gave them light.
Then food. “The people asked, and he brought quails, and satisfied them with the bread of heaven.” Then water. “He opened the rock, and the waters gushed out; they ran in the dry places like a river.” Shade, light, bread, and water, every one of them in a place where none of it should have been. When I read that list, I think of the things He has put in my path that had no business being there.
Why did He do it? The psalm tells us. “For he remembered his holy promise, and Abraham his servant.” Not because Israel had earned it. They grumbled most of the way. I am afraid I would have grumbled right along with them. He did it because He had given His word.
I am thankful that God’s provision does not depend on my performance. He keeps His promises because of who He is, not because of how well I am doing.
You may be walking through a dry place right now. The same God who opened the rock still remembers His holy promise, and He has not forgotten you.
