Rest for the Weary Body and the Trusting Soul

There are two kinds of tired. There’s the kind where you need a nap… and then there’s the kind where a nap won’t fix it. I’ve discovered that sometimes I can sleep eight hours and still wake up tired — not because my body didn’t rest, but because my heart didn’t. Physical rest is a gift from God. He designed us to need sleep. Even machines overheat if they run too long. And if you’ve ever tried to “power through” exhaustion, you know it doesn’t make you more spiritual — it just makes you cranky.

In fact, one of the most spiritual things you can do sometimes is go to bed. God built rest into creation itself. On the seventh day, He rested — not because He was tired, but because He was establishing a rhythm for us. We are not designed to run endlessly. We need quiet. We need pause. We need margin. Our bodies require it.

But Jesus speaks of a deeper rest in Matthew 11. He doesn’t simply promise better sleep; He promises rest for the soul. That kind of weariness comes from carrying burdens we were never meant to carry — anxiety about tomorrow, guilt from yesterday, pressure to control what only God can control. Spiritual exhaustion often comes from trying to be our own savior. And Jesus gently says, “Come unto me.” Not “Try harder.” Not “Fix yourself.” Just come.

Physical rest restores your strength. Spiritual rest restores your peace. And that rest is found in trusting God — really trusting Him. Trusting that He is sovereign. Trusting that He is good. Trusting that He is at work even when you are asleep. Psalm 127 reminds us that the Lord gives His beloved sleep. Imagine that — while you’re snoring (gracefully, of course), God is still running the universe just fine.

Maybe today the most faith-filled thing you could do is stop striving. Close the laptop. Turn off the noise. Lay your burdens at the feet of Christ. Rest your body. Rest your soul. He is not asking you to carry the world. He already has.
