Now Paul gives the prescription. The issue in this church was strife-friction caused by selfish ambition. Nothing should be done out of self-promotion or empty pride. “Only by pride cometh contention” (Proverbs 13:10), and that is exactly what Paul is addressing. I must ask myself-why do I do what I do? What is my motive? Instead of lifting myself up, I am to walk in lowliness of mind. True humility esteems others above self. This is not natural-it is spiritual.
