This verse defines ministry. Ministry is not presenting ourselves-it is holding forth the Word of life.

We do not serve to promote ourselves-we serve to present truth. The focus is not on us, but on the message. We hold forth the Word, and we hold fast to it.

Paul ties this to eternal reward. He speaks of rejoicing in the day of Christ-that his labour would not be in vain. Their obedience and faithfulness would prove that his investment in their lives was worthwhile.
