Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, — Philippians 1:4
Paul’s remembrance of the Philippians naturally led him to pray for them. His thankfulness overflowed into intercession.
Notice the words “always” and “every prayer.” Paul faithfully carried these believers before the Lord. Their spiritual growth and success in the Christian life mattered deeply to him.
What stands out most is that Paul prayed with joy. The world often connects joy with pleasant circumstances, but Christian joy is much deeper. Paul was imprisoned, yet his heart was full of joy because of what God was doing in the lives of others.
Joy is a divine gift produced by the Holy Spirit. It does not depend on outward situations. A believer may experience sorrow, hardship, and sacrifice, yet still rejoice in the work of God (2 Corinthians 6:10).
Paul’s joy came from several sources: fellowship with God, the salvation of others, the progress of the Gospel, and the hope of eternal reward. The more we invest our lives in God’s work, the more we will discover this kind of joy.
