Philippians 1:24 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you. — Philippians 1:24

Though Paul longed to be with Christ, he immediately shows the selfless heart of a true servant. He says that to remain in the flesh is more needful for you. Paul’s life was not centered on personal preference, but on spiritual usefulness.

He knew that his continued presence would benefit these believers. They still needed teaching, strengthening, exhortation, and example. This reveals the heart of a shepherd. Paul does not merely ask, “What do I want?” He asks, “What would most help God’s people?” Love always thinks this way. Love considers the good of others.

There is pastoral beauty here. Paul is ready to go to heaven, but willing to stay on earth for the help of the church. That is Christlike service.
