Philippians 1:10 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ; — Philippians 1:10

The result of this growing love and discernment is the ability to approve the things that are excellent.

This phrase refers to the ability to distinguish between what truly matters and what does not. Life is full of choices, but not all choices carry equal weight. A spiritually mature believer learns to discern the things that are most valuable in God’s sight.

Paul desired that the Philippians would live sincere lives. The word carries the idea of being pure and genuine-like a clear window through which light can shine. There would be no hypocrisy, only a transparent life that reflects Christ.

He also prayed that they would be without offence, meaning they would not become a stumbling block to others. Their lives would point people toward Christ rather than away from Him.

The ultimate goal is to live faithfully until the day of Christ, when believers will stand before the Lord.
