John 14:5 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? — John 14:5

Thomas is honest. He speaks what the others were likely thinking. He does not understand where Jesus is going, and therefore he does not understand how to get there.

Thomas’ question is important because it opens the door for one of the greatest declarations Jesus ever made.

There is something helpful about Thomas here. He does not pretend to understand when he does not. He brings his confusion to the Lord. That is a good thing. The Lord is not offended by honest questions brought with a sincere heart.

Thomas says, “how can we know the way?”

That is still the great question of humanity.

How can man come to God?
How can sinners be forgiven?
How can the lost be saved?
How can the guilty be made clean?
How can the dead receive life?
How can we know the way?

Jesus answers with Himself.
