John 13:33 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you. — John 13:33

This is one of the tenderest moments in the Gospel of John. Jesus calls them: "Little children.”

These disciples had failed Him repeatedly. They misunderstood Him often. Before the night was over, they would scatter in fear. Yet Jesus still speaks to them with deep affection and compassion.

Jesus knew His earthly ministry was nearing its end. The disciples could not yet follow Him to the cross or into Heaven.

There is sorrow in His words because separation was coming, but there is also compassion. Jesus loved these men deeply.

Sometimes God allows seasons where we do not fully understand where He is leading us. The disciples could not yet comprehend what was happening, but Jesus still cared for them through their confusion (John 14:1-3, Isaiah 41:10, Hebrews 13:5).
