Genesis 2:24 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. — Genesis 2:24

This verse gives the foundation of marriage.

Marriage involves leaving, cleaving, and becoming one flesh. A man leaves father and mother, cleaves unto his wife, and the two become one flesh.

God ordained marriage in the Garden of Eden. Before sin entered the world, before governments, before nations, and before human institutions, God established marriage.

Marriage is one man and one woman becoming one flesh for one life.

Someone said it is a human pair, different than all other pairs.

Jesus quoted this verse in Matthew 19:4-5: “And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?”

Jesus grounded marriage in creation. He pointed back to the beginning and affirmed that God made them male and female.

Paul also writes in Ephesians 5:28: “So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.”

A husband is to love his wife because she is not merely attached to him legally; she is one flesh with him. To care for her is to care for himself. To wound her is to wound himself. God designed marriage to be a covenant of love, unity, faithfulness, and care.
