Galatians 5:22 | Bro. Robert Mahar

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, — Galatians 5:22

Paul now gives the contrast: “But the fruit of the Spirit…” The flesh produces works, but the Spirit produces fruit. Fruit is the result of life. A tree does not strain to produce fruit; it bears fruit because of the life within it. In the same way, the Christian life is not merely manufactured behavior. It is the life of Christ being produced in us by the Holy Spirit.

The first fruit mentioned is love. This is foundational. Then comes joy, which is deeper than circumstances. Peace is the settled rest of a heart trusting God. Longsuffering is patience under pressure. Gentleness is kindness in action. Goodnessis moral uprightness and generosity. Faith speaks of trustworthiness, faithfulness, and dependence upon God.
