Exodus 7:13 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

And he hardened Pharaoh's heart, that he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said. — Exodus 7:13

As I come to this verse, I see Pharaoh’s heart being hardened after the miracle of the rods. Even though Aaron’s rod swallowed the others, Pharaoh still would not listen.

I believe the hardening here is connected to the miracle itself. The imitation gave Pharaoh just enough room to doubt and avoid surrender. This is how deception works-if Satan can provide a plausible alternative, many will choose comfort over submission.

Paul refers to these men in 2 Timothy 3:8, showing that they resisted the truth. And Scripture is clear that Satan can produce signs and lying wonders (2 Thessalonians 2:9). Not all supernatural things are from God.

What stands out to me is that Aaron’s rod swallowed their rods. The Bible calls them rods, not serpents. That matters. In Egyptian symbolism, the serpent represented authority and power. So when Aaron’s rod swallows theirs, God is making a statement-your authority is consumed, your power is nothing before Me.

Isaiah 40:23 reminds me that God brings princes to nothing. This swallowing is a preview of total victory. Just as Aaron’s rod consumed theirs, one day death itself will be swallowed up in victory (1 Corinthians 15:54).
