And I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me: and if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay thy son, even thy firstborn. — Exodus 4:23
God’s demand is clear: “Let my son go, that he may serve me.” If Pharaoh refuses, God declares judgment upon Pharaoh’s firstborn.
This verse reveals the purpose of deliverance: service and worship. Israel is delivered not merely from bondage but unto God.
The warning about Pharaoh’s firstborn also introduces the principle of measured judgment. Pharaoh has oppressed God’s son; God will answer in kind.
