Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, — 2 Thessalonians 2:1
Paul lovingly pleads with these believers concerning two great truths: the coming of Jesus Christ and the gathering together of believers unto Him. The word “coming” speaks of the parousia-the visible return of Christ. Paul is reminding them that Jesus is truly coming again just as the angels declared in Acts 1:11. This gathering together points to believers being assembled unto Christ. Their hope was not in this world, but in the return of their Saviour.
Notice Paul calls them “brethren.” These are saved people who had become fearful and unsettled because of false teaching. Even sincere Christians can become confused when they stop grounding themselves in biblical truth.
