Supper on the Tailgate

October 13, 2026 ●
By Pastor Jerry A. Burns
Psalm 23:5
"Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over."

Ray was racing to get his last field of corn off before the rain. His wife drove out with a hot supper, set it on the tailgate, and said, “Sit down and eat. The field will still be here in ten minutes.” The work was not done, but supper came anyway.

David knew what it was to be fed before the trouble was over.

The Bible does not tell us exactly when he wrote this psalm. But think of the day he fled Jerusalem from his own son Absalom. An army was coming after him. Out in the wilderness, friends brought him beds, wheat, honey and cheese, “for they said, The people is hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness” (2 Samuel 17:29). The danger had not gone away. Yet David sat down and ate.

That is the same picture we find in this verse. Just before it, David is walking “through the valley of the shadow of death” (v. 4). Now the Lord who led him like a shepherd sets a table for him, right where his enemies can see. They are still there, but they cannot stop the meal.

And that table is not thrown together in a hurry. The word “preparest” means to set in order, to arrange ahead of time. God planned His care for you before you ever got there. Nor does He give barely enough. He anoints David’s head like an honoured guest, and the cup runs over.

It is easy to think God will bless us once the trouble ends. But David found Him setting the table right in the middle of it. God does not wait for the battle to end before He feeds His children.

What has He set on your table this week, right in the middle of what is still unsettled?

Application

Before your next meal today, name one trouble in your life that is not over yet. Then thank the Lord out loud for one thing He has provided for you right in the middle of it.

Victory Verse

"I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving." — Psalm 69:30

Additional Verses
"For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the Lord."
"I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."
"What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?"
"But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus."

In this week’s message titled "What are you Seeking?" from Kitchener Baptist Church, Pastor Jerry A. Burns explores John 20 to show how the world searches for meaning in the wrong places. Listeners will hear how Solomon looked for purpose in worldly success and pleasures only to find vanity, and how Mary Magdalene sought her Savior at the tomb, weeping for the dead before discovering He had risen.

Pastor Burns reminds us that true life is found only in Jesus Christ. The reality of Christ gives us life, and His resurrection is the key to our salvation and eternal life. We must choose life, for Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. Join us on "Timeless Truths" as we turn to God's Word for these vital answers.
