Mending the Net

October 12, 2026 ●
By Pastor Jerry A. Burns
1 Thessalonians 3:10
"Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?"

“Perfect” can sound like a frightening word. When we hear it, we think of something with no flaws at all. But that is not what Paul meant here.

The Greek word means to mend, to put back in working order what has been torn. Matthew uses the same word when Jesus finds James and John in a ship with their father, “mending their nets.” Paul uses it again in Galatians 6:1, where a man overtaken in a fault is to be restored.

So when Paul prayed that he might “perfect that which is lacking,” he was not saying the faith of the Thessalonians was worthless. Timothy had just come back with good news. They were standing fast under affliction, and Paul was glad. But their net had a few torn places. They were confused about the Lord’s return, and they were grieving loved ones who had died. Paul longed to come to them and mend those places.

That shows us how God works. He does not throw away a torn net. He mends it.

Your faith has held, and the Lord has used it. But there may be a place where it has torn. It might be a promise you have quietly stopped believing, or a command you have read many times but never obeyed.

That is no reason for shame. It is simply the place the Lord wants to mend next. Paul did that mending by praying for them and writing to them. God still mends us the same way, through His Word, through prayer, and through His people.

So do not hide the torn place. Bring it to Him.

Application

Before you go to bed tonight, name one torn place in your faith to the Lord in prayer. Then find one verse that speaks to it and write it down. This week, ask a believer you trust at church to pray with you about it.

"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:"
"Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily."

Trusting God With Tomorrow (Pt. 3)

In this final part of the message, “Trusting God with Tomorrow,” we are brought face to face with a powerful truth from Scripture—while we often plan our days and assume the future, the Bible teaches us that life is fragile, uncertain, and completely in God’s hands. As James reminds us, our life is “even a vapour” that appears for a little time and then vanishes away . The issue is not planning, but planning without God—living as though we are in control of what only God knows.

This message walks through the heart of biblical trust: having a proper perspective of tomorrow, a humble posture before God today, and a surrendered plan that says, “If the Lord will.” Whether facing uncertainty, fear, or the illusion of control, we are called to draw near to God, rest in His care, and trust that His will is good, even when tomorrow is unknown. Because Christ has risen, our future is secure—not in our plans, but in His perfect hands.
