Psalms 46:8 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth. — Psalms 46:8

Stanza Three - Verses 8-11

God Is Our Refuge in All the Earth

Verse 8

The psalmist now invites the congregation - and us - to look. Not to look away from the destruction, but to look at it and see who is behind it. The desolations He has made are not signs of His absence. They are evidence of His sovereign governance of history.

This is a difficult verse for modern readers. We are more comfortable with God as healer and restorer. But the psalm insists that the God who comforts is also the God who judges - and that both are expressions of the same holy character. To see His desolations and understand them rightly is itself an act of worship.
