Genesis 3:19 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. — Genesis 3:19

The labour of man would now be intensified. Adam would eat bread by the sweat of his face.

There was work before the fall, but now labour would be strenuous. The ground would resist him. Life would be hard.

This verse also speaks of physical death. Adam and Eve died spiritually the moment they sinned, but they would also eventually die physically.

God had formed Adam from the dust, and now Adam would return to the dust.

This is why death is in the world. Romans 5:12 says, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin.”

Death is not natural to God’s original creation. Death is the result of sin.
