Genesis 3:17 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; — Genesis 3:17

God now speaks to Adam.

Adam’s sin was that he listened to the wrong voice above the voice of God. It is good for a husband to listen to his wife. Proverbs 11:14 says, “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellers there is safety.”

But God is our ultimate authority. Adam was responsible to obey God.

Because of Adam’s sin, the ground was cursed. Adam had been given dominion, but sin affected that dominion. He lost the crown, so to speak.

Hebrews 2:7-9, quoting Psalm 8, says man was crowned with glory and honour and given dominion over the works of God’s hands, but then says, “But now we see not yet all things put under him. But we see Jesus…”

Adam failed, but Christ would come as the perfect Man.

Adam would now eat in sorrow all the days of his life. Work existed before the fall, but now work would be harder, frustrating, and painful.
