Genesis 2:20 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. — Genesis 2:20

Adam named all the animals, but no suitable helper was found for him.

None of the animals were on the same level as Adam. They could not complete him. They could not share life with him as one made in the image of God.

This verse makes Adam’s need clear. He needed someone who was like him, yet distinct from him. Someone suitable. Someone who could walk with him in the calling God had given.

Matthew Henry wrote a beautiful statement about the creation of woman: “She was not made out of his head to rule over him, nor out of his feet to be trampled upon by him, but out of his side to be equal with him, under his arm to be protected, and near his heart to be beloved.”

That is a tender picture of God’s design. Woman was not made to be despised, belittled, or mistreated. She was made to be loved, protected, honoured, and cherished.
