God filled the garden with trees that were pleasant to the sight and good for food. The garden was not only useful; it was beautiful. God created a world that could be enjoyed.

This verse shows us that God is not against beauty, pleasure, or enjoyment when those things are enjoyed under His authority. Adam had all that he needed in the garden. God gave him abundance.

The Bible then mentions two trees in particular: the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

The tree of life appears to be connected with ongoing physical life. Later, after man sins, access to this tree is restricted so that man does not live forever in a fallen condition.

The tree of knowledge of good and evil is the tree involved in the fall of man. It became the place where Adam and Eve would be tested concerning obedience to the Word of God.

So, in the middle of a garden filled with freedom and provision, God placed one clear boundary.
