Philippians 1:26 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again. — Philippians 1:26

Paul’s desire was that when he came to them again, their rejoicing would overflow in Jesus Christ. Even here, Paul carefully keeps the focus where it belongs. He does not want them merely rejoicing in Paul as a personality. He wants their rejoicing to abound in Jesus Christ because of what Christ has done in allowing them to see Paul again.

This is a faithful minister’s heart. He is glad to be a means of blessing, but he does not want to become the center of attention. He wants Christ to receive the praise.

This verse also reminds us how deeply personal Paul’s relationship was with these believers. He wanted to see them again. He wanted to be used in their lives. He rejoiced at the thought of their increased joy in Christ.
