Philippians 1:8 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ. — Philippians 1:8

Paul calls upon God as his witness that his affection for these believers is genuine.

The phrase “bowels of Jesus Christ” refers to the deepest seat of human emotion and compassion. Paul is saying that his love for them is not merely human affection-it is the very compassion of Christ flowing through him.

He longed for their spiritual growth, their protection, and their flourishing. His heart was aligned with the heart of Christ.

When a believer walks closely with the Lord, something remarkable happens. The desires of Christ begin to shape our own desires. The things that matter to Christ begin to matter to us.

Paul’s love for the Philippians reflected the love of Christ Himself.
