When the Fire Spreads

In the spring of 1894, the Baltimore Orioles traveled to Boston for what should have been a routine baseball game. Instead, a single argument between Orioles’ player John McGraw and the Boston third baseman ignited a fight. Players rushed in. Then fans joined. In the chaos, someone set fire to the grandstands. The flames consumed the entire ballpark—and then spread to 107 other buildings across the city. What began as one heated moment turned into a devastating blaze.

That is the nature of unchecked conflict. A spark seems small. A harsh word. A wounded ego. A moment of pride. But when no one steps back, when no one refuses to “add wood to the fire,” the damage multiplies. What could have ended with a handshake instead ended with a city in flames. Scripture reminds us that strife does not sustain itself without fuel. It needs pride, gossip, anger, and retaliation to grow. Remove the fuel, and the fire dies.

How many relational fires begin just this way? A misunderstanding in a marriage. A sharp exchange in a church hallway. A disagreement between friends. Left alone, it might cool. Fed with repeated retellings, social media posts, or stubborn silence, it spreads. The enemy delights in escalation. But the Spirit of God calls us to be peacemakers. One humble apology can extinguish what pride would inflame. One gentle answer can stop what wrath would accelerate.

Before you respond in anger, ask yourself: Am I throwing water on this situation—or gasoline? The world has enough fires. Let your life be known not for kindling strife, but for calming it.
