When I Look Fine… But Something’s Wrong Inside

I’ve been thinking about this passage in where the men of Jericho came to Elisha and said, “The situation is pleasant… but the water is naught, and the ground barren.” That statement has been sticking with me. Because if I’m honest, there have been seasons in my life where everything looked fine on the outside—but something wasn’t right inside.

I could preach, serve, smile, and go through the motions. The “city” looked pleasant. But down at the source—the heart—there were things I hadn’t dealt with. Maybe a little bitterness. Maybe some pride. Maybe just a drifting spirit where I wasn’t as close to God as I once was. And what happens in those seasons is exactly what happened in Jericho—there’s activity, but no real fruit. Ministry starts to feel heavy. The joy isn’t there like it used to be. And if I’m not careful, I can convince myself everything is okay just because everything looks okay.

What challenges me about this passage is that Elisha didn’t treat the surface—he went straight to the spring. That’s where God always goes in my life too. He doesn’t just want to fix what people see—He wants to deal with what’s producing it. And I’ve learned this: if I don’t let God deal with the source, the same issues keep showing up again and again. Like a root under the surface, it just keeps coming back.

But I love what happens next. Elisha casts salt into the source, and God says, “I have healed these waters.” That’s hope. That means I’m not stuck this way. When I come to God honestly—no pretending, no covering—He can change what’s inside of me. He can take what’s been barren and make it fruitful again. He can restore the joy, the freshness, the walk with Him.

I don’t need to look better—I need to be right with God. And when the heart is right, everything else starts to follow.
