Lessons I Learned From My Mother

Mothers are a wonderful gift from God. I am so grateful for the mother God gave me and the godly influence she has been in my life.

It amazes me that of all of the illustrations that God could have used to illustrate His compassion and love, He used the illustration of a mother’s love.

Can a woman forget her sucking child, That she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, Yet will I not forget thee.

Isaiah 49:15

There is definitely a special place in the heart of God for mothers.

This article is simple. I want to list the blessings and influence that my own mother had in my life. By the way, her name is Donna. She is a wonderful woman and has been such a tremendous prayer warrior, mentor, and helper in my life.

The Bible says that praise should come from another man’s lips (Proverbs 27:2). I’m going to praise our Saviour through His work in my mom’s life. Below are a few characteristics that I noticed in her life over the years, which have been a blessing to me.

She Loves God

No mother is perfect. If I asked any mother, they would tell me that they have had regrets in their life. Regrets are not just a motherhood thing; it’s a life thing.

Even though my mother isn’t perfect, I know that she loves the Lord. I’m thankful for that goodly heritage that she instilled in me – love God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

She Loves God’s Word

I realized that my mother had a real relationship with God at a young age. Every morning before life got busy; my mom would spend time reading her Bible (2 Timothy 1:5).

As a child, this makes a difference in your life. You see that your mother’s faith isn’t manufactured – it’s real and dynamic. Her walk with God was something that I sought in my life as well.

She’s Human

I’m not trying to be obvious here; I know that every woman is human, but hear me out.

My point is that when I was growing up, my mother didn’t hide from me her fears and troubles. She was open about her struggles in her life but always explained her trust in God. She didn’t have the social media mindset where you only post the good things – I saw her hurting, but I also saw her smile and laugh.

We all have troubles; it’s no secret. My mom was young when her husband died. Yet, God’s grace was evident in her life, and I saw it (1 Peter 5:12)!

I love that the Bible doesn’t sugar coat life. It doesn’t hide sin and people’s bad decisions; it openly describes what happens when we do not follow God. The Bible reveals the negative but encourages us to make wise decisions and follow God so that we can receive His rich blessings.

She’s Faithful

I have many memories of my childhood. One of those memories is my mom’s faithfulness to the Lord and His house. Every time the doors were open, she was always inside worshipping God.

Even days after my dad had passed away, as a fifteen-year-old boy, I remember in church with my mom singing those old hymns of the faith. Even in great trials and afflictions, my mom saw the importance of being in church.

She’s Forgiving

If you asked my mom for forgiveness – she would give it to you!

I saw this characteristic in my mom time and time again. I say this laughing, my mom is a stubborn woman; it’s her German roots, I guess. But at the same time, she would forgive anyone.

Oh, what I have seen and times that people have treated my mom wrongly, yet she forgave. I admired her for her forgiving spirit.

I remember when I dented her new car (at least new to her). I thought that she was going to kill me, and I probably deserved it. Yet, in the end, she forgave me. Of course, forgiveness doesn’t always erase the past, and I wasn’t allowed to drive her car for a while, but I was glad to escape the situation alive.

My mom taught me to forgive as Jesus Christ always forgives us.

Conclusion

My Mom is a great blessing to me, and I am thankful for her unwavering faith (Galatians 1:24)!

And they glorified God in me.

Galatians 1:24

Please pray for my mom as she struggles with her health.

I love you mom, God bless you!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there! May God’s richest blessings be showered upon your life.
