Faith and Patience in the Face of Opposition

1 Corinthians 15:58
"Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”"

Charles Simeon was thrilled when he was appointed pastor of a church in Cambridge, England, in 1783. He believed God had opened the door for him to preach Christ and reach souls with the gospel. Yet instead of warm support, he faced cold resistance. Many influential members of the church strongly opposed his burden for evangelism and his biblical convictions. They literally locked their pew boxes so visitors could not sit in them, forcing those who came to hear him preach to stand in the aisles or sit on the floor.

That kind of opposition could have easily broken his spirit. It is painful when resistance comes not from the world, but from people inside the church. It hurts deeply when you are trying to obey God and yet face criticism, rejection, and misunderstanding. Simeon admitted the burden was heavy, but he found his strength in “faith and patience.” He chose to trust that if God would bless the few who came, the work would still be fruitful. Instead of measuring success by visible approval, he measured it by God’s faithfulness.

Many believers face the same temptation today. When opposition rises, we often assume we must be doing something wrong. But sometimes opposition is not a sign of failure—it is evidence that we are standing where God wants us to stand. Noah faced opposition. Moses faced opposition. Paul faced opposition. Even our Lord Jesus Christ faced constant resistance. If we require universal approval before we obey God, we will never accomplish anything for His glory.

Faithfulness is often tested in lonely seasons. There are days when the pews seem empty, the encouragement is scarce, and the burden feels heavy. In those moments, God calls us not to quit, but to continue. Stay faithful. Keep teaching. Keep praying. Keep serving. Keep loving people. God sees what others do not. Heaven records what earth overlooks.

Simeon stayed, endured, and trusted God. In time, God used his ministry powerfully, influencing England and the world through missions and gospel preaching. What if he had quit during the hard days? What if he had allowed opposition to silence him? His perseverance reminds us that the fruit often comes after the trial, not before.

Do not let criticism stop your calling. Do not let opposition rob your obedience. Stand firm in the Lord. The God who called you is faithful, and your labor is never in vain when it is done for Him.

Application

If you are facing discouragement because of opposition, do not measure your success by applause. Measure it by faithfulness. Ask yourself, “Am I obeying God?” If the answer is yes, then keep going. Faith and patience will carry you where feelings cannot.

Luke 20:27-47

27 Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,
28 Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
29 There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.
30 And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.
31 And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died.
32 Last of all the woman died also.
33 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.
34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:
35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:
36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.
37 Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.
39 Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.
40 And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.
41 And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David's son?
42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
44 David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?
45 Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples,
46 Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;
47 Which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.

Trusting God With Tomorrow (Pt. 3)

In this final part of the message, “Trusting God with Tomorrow,” we are brought face to face with a powerful truth from Scripture—while we often plan our days and assume the future, the Bible teaches us that life is fragile, uncertain, and completely in God’s hands. As James reminds us, our life is “even a vapour” that appears for a little time and then vanishes away . The issue is not planning, but planning without God—living as though we are in control of what only God knows.

This message walks through the heart of biblical trust: having a proper perspective of tomorrow, a humble posture before God today, and a surrendered plan that says, “If the Lord will.” Whether facing uncertainty, fear, or the illusion of control, we are called to draw near to God, rest in His care, and trust that His will is good, even when tomorrow is unknown. Because Christ has risen, our future is secure—not in our plans, but in His perfect hands.
