What Does it Mean to Be a Christian?

It’s a statement that’s overused and misunderstood. It would seem that everyone is a Christian these days, but not in the way that’s presented in the Bible. Being a Christian is not just a title that we attach to our life, but a transformation that has happened in our heart.

Being a “Christian”, and knowing for sure that you’ll go to Heaven when this life is over is the most important question you’re going to answer in your lifetime.

You need to be sure, and you can be sure.

This is what I want to talk about in this post. I want to discuss what it mean to be a Christian. I want you to know for sure that you are going to Heaven after this life is over.

Biblical Salvation

For eternal questions, you need to make sure that you are finding the answers from the right source.

Hollywood, unbelievers, and those that do not take a stand for the truth are dangerous places to learn about God.

There are some people that get their knowledge about the Bible and God from a movie they watched, a book they have read or a friend or family member that has given them their opinion about God and the Bible.

Our Source for Truth

The first step in knowing the Truth is to go to the Truth Himself (John 14:6). Jesus, who is the Word (John 1:1), is the only source for spiritual enlightenment (Romans 10:17).

“So then faith comethby hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Romans 10:17
The Word of God is where you find the truth about life and death

The Bible has all the answers to the questions that you may have concerning life and death (2 Peter 1:3), and you can rest assure that it’s accurate because the Bible is written by God Himself (2 Timothy 3:16).

When you have a product that breaks or fails to function as it should, who do you go to for answers for repairing or troubleshooting that product? You go to the manufacturer. You talk to the ones who created the product. They are the ones that know the product the best.

God is the Creator of life (Genesis 2:7). He knows the intricate details of our life and His Book – the Bible – is the best place to learn the answers that we need.

“And the LORDGod formed man ofthe dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

Genesis 2:7

What does the Bible say about our lives?

We Are Sinners (Romans 3:23)

The Bible teaches us that we have all sinned against God. This means that we have all broken God’s divine law, and are guilty before Him (Romans 3:19). The news goes from bad to worse, because we are sinners we deserve death (Romans 6:23).

God teaches us that our wage for sin is death and that this spiritual death is eternal separation from Him forever in a place called Hell (Revelation 20:19).

Hell isn’t the party that this world jokes about.

It’s a place without light, truth and good (because God is light, truth and all that is good). Hell is a literal place of torment that was originally created for the Devil and his angels (Matthew 25:21).

Jesus Died for Us

Yet, in the darkness of our lost condition, there is Light. Jesus came to this world to offer us eternal life (John 3:16). He came to this world, lived a perfect life, was nailed to an old Roman cross and then placed in a borrowed tomb.

Jesus Died for Us

Death could not defeat the Son of God (1 Corinthians 15:54). Jesus Christ, who is God and has power over sin, death, and the grave, rose from the dead three days later (Romans 8:34).

He promises life to all that put their trust in Him (John 3:15).

Call Out to Christ Today

The Bible says that “whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved . . .” (Romans 10:13). This is the greatest promise that you will ever hear! Jesus has promised to save anyone that calls out to Him for salvation – this includes you.

We are hopelessly lost as far as our ability to save ourselves, but God who is rich in mercy came to us and died for us while we were yet in our sinful state (Romans 5:8).

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans 5:8

He offers us salvation that gives us victory, peace, and eternal life. We can be free from the penalty of sin and secure in God’s rich salvation (Romans 8:1).

A True Worshipper (John 4:23)

Jesus said that the true worshippers would worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.

This statement is so powerful.

A true worshipper is one who is right with God (Romans 5:1). How can one be right with God when we are sinners? The theological term for this is justification (Romans 5:18). The work of Jesus on the cross is to bring a sinner to a place of rightousness. When someone puts their faith in Jesus for their soul’s salvation, a miracle happen instantly in someone’s life.

At the moment of putting their trust in Jesus, a person goes from darkness to light (Acts 26:18), being a part of the Devil’s family to being adopted into God’s family (Galatians 4:5), and having their sins washed away and separated from them as far as the East is from the West (Psalm 103:12). This person becomes positionally right with God, because the righteousness of Jesus Christ is placed upon them (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Being a Christian is more than a title, or living in a nation that claims to be “Christian”. It’s more than just attending “a church” or trying to be a “good person“.

A Christian is about being a “little Christ“. This is only accomplished through Christ’s work on the cross (2 Corinthians 5:12).

Has there been a time in your life when you have asked Jesus to be your Saviour?

Why not pray right now and ask Him to save you?

You see, being a Christian is the greatest thing in all the world!
