The Lord is My Faithful Shepherd
The Lord is My Faithful Shepherd
Psalm 23 is David’s personal confession of trust: “The LORD is my shepherd.” Not merely a shepherd, but my shepherd—powerful, present, and personal. Because He leads, there is provision and peace: green pastures for rest, still waters for restoration, and right paths for His name’s sake. Even in the darkest valley, fear gives way to confidence, because the Shepherd’s rod and staff protect and guide. God’s care is not theoretical; it is near, practical, and tender.
The psalm then shifts from valleys to victory. God prepares a table in the presence of enemies, anoints the head with oil, and causes the cup to overflow—signs of honor, healing, and abundance. David ends with certainty, not guesswork: goodness and mercy will pursue him all his days, and his final address is settled—the house of the LORD forever. In short: a powerful Shepherd, a personal Shepherd, and a purposeful Shepherd who provides for our present, protects us in trouble, and secures our eternal future.
