Jesus declared, “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” With these words, He revealed one of the most tender and powerful truths about His relationship with His people. Unlike hirelings—those who care only for themselves and abandon the flock at the first sign of danger—Jesus willingly lays down His life for the sheep.
This message is part of our series on the “I AM” declarations of Christ, each one revealing a unique aspect of His identity and mission. We’ve already seen that He is the Bread of Life, the True Vine, and the Door to salvation. In John 10, Jesus now draws a contrast between false shepherds, who seek their own gain, and Himself, the Good Shepherd who loves, protects, and personally cares for His flock.
In this sermon, Pastor Burns unpacks:
- The Shepherd’s Provision – Jesus gave His life as the ultimate sacrifice, meeting humanity’s greatest need: forgiveness and eternal life.
- The Shepherd’s Protection – Unlike hirelings, He does not flee from danger. He faced sin, death, and the devil—and overcame them.
- The Shepherd’s Personal Care – Christ knows His sheep by name. He understands our deepest hurts, fears, and needs.
- The Shepherd’s Pursuit – He seeks out “other sheep,” extending His invitation of salvation to all nations.
- The Shepherd’s Power – Jesus laid down His life willingly, and He took it up again in victory, securing eternal salvation for all who believe.
From Psalm 23 to John 10, the Bible reveals a God who is not distant but deeply personal—guiding, protecting, and loving His people. Jesus is not just a shepherd—He is the Good Shepherd.
Do you know Him? More importantly, does He know you?
