Zephaniah 3:2 “She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the Lord; she drew not near to her God.”
There’s something sobering in those last words: “she drew not near to her God.” It doesn’t say she turned and ran from Him. It simply says—she didn’t come close. That’s the danger for many of us. It’s not open rebellion that ruins us (though Israel was also rebellious); it’s quiet distance. A slow drifting. A faith that once burned hot, now grown cold.
It reminds me of when I was out walking near the shoreline. The water was calm, the sun warm, and my small boat tied off nearby. But as I got distracted by the beauty around me, I didn’t realize the tide had been slowly pulling the boat away. By the time I looked up, it was too far to reach. I didn’t do anything to cause it—I just wasn’t paying attention. And that’s how spiritual drift happens. One day we just stop praying as much. We stop opening the Word. We skip one Sunday, then another. And before we know it, God feels distant—not because He moved, but because we did.
But here’s the good news: God invites us back. Every day is a fresh opportunity to draw near again. He’s not angry and distant—He’s ready and waiting. Maybe today is the day you take the first step back. Let your heart beat with His again. Don’t just talk about being close to God—come close. He’s right there.
