Genesis 3:6 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. — Genesis 3:6

This verse shows us the steps into sin.

First, she saw it. Sin often begins with the eyes. Eve saw that the tree was good for food. This is the lust of the flesh: “I want that.”

We live in a world built around this kind of appeal. Commercials are everywhere. A Super Bowl commercial can cost around seven million dollars because advertisers know they only need thirty seconds or a minute to convince people that their lives are empty without a product. “See this. Want this. Buy this.”

Satan always presents sin as better than it actually is. Sin is pictured as exciting, fun, and freeing. But the Bible says sin brings bondage.

Second, she desired it. Her look turned into lust. James 1:14-15 says, “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin.”

This reminds us of Lot. He saw the well-watered plains of Sodom. His look turned into desire. He wanted those plains, but the cost was greater than he was willing to pay.

Third, she took it. The Bible says she took of the fruit and ate. Then she gave to her husband, and he ate.

Eve was deceived, but Adam chose to disobey. 1 Timothy 2:14 says, “And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.”

Adam sinned knowingly. He listened to the wrong voice, rejected God’s command, and plunged the human race into sin.
