Romans 5:5 “And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”
Cultural hope is like a balloon—bright and cheerful, but easily deflated. You hope your favorite team wins. You hope the weather cooperates. You hope things work out. But often, they don’t. That kind of hope leaves people ashamed, disappointed, and disillusioned. But Paul writes of a hope that “maketh not ashamed.” It’s a confidence rooted not in circumstance, but in the love of God poured into our hearts.
The Holy Spirit doesn’t just visit occasionally; He moves in, floods our lives with assurance, and reminds us we’re deeply loved. This kind of hope is rugged and real. It’s not about everything going our way—it’s about knowing that even when everything feels wrong, we’re still held by the One who makes all things right in the end. This isn’t wishful thinking. It’s a divine guarantee. And that’s why this hope never leads to shame—it always leads us home.
