Trusting God Enough to Put Him First

Series: Trust in Him

Book: Matthew

Introduction

Every new year brings fresh hopes, plans, and pressures—but nothing will shape our year more than what we choose to put first. In Matthew 6:24–34, Jesus speaks to people who were living under real financial strain, heavy taxation, and deep uncertainty about the future. His message is just as relevant today. Worry, anxiety, and fear often reveal a deeper struggle of divided loyalty between trusting God and trusting material security. This sermon reminds us that peace does not come from having more—it comes from trusting God enough to place Him first.

The Priority of Seeking God

Jesus’ command to “seek first” calls us to intentional, wholehearted pursuit of God. A God-first life does not happen accidentally—it is built through deliberate decisions to pray, obey, and trust the Lord. Like Nehemiah, believers must move beyond good intentions and actively seek God with their whole heart, making Him the center rather than an emergency option when life goes wrong.

The Pursuit of God’s Kingdom

The kingdom of God is not a place—it is Christ reigning in the heart. When Jesus is King, He governs our schedules, our values, our families, and our choices. Seeking His kingdom is a daily commitment to live under His authority instead of being ruled by fear, self, or the pressures of the world.

The Practice of God’s Righteousness

Putting God first also means pursuing a life that honors Him. Instead of chasing wealth, comfort, or control, believers are called to follow after godliness, faith, love, humility, and endurance. When Christ rules the heart, it reshapes how we think, speak, and live, producing a life that reflects His character.

The Promise of God’s Provision

Jesus ends with a powerful promise: when God is first, “all these things shall be added unto you.” God faithfully supplies what His children need—sometimes materially, always spiritually. When we trust Him, worry loses its power and peace takes its place. As we enter 2026 under the theme “Trust in Him,” this message calls every believer to place Christ back on the throne and experience the freedom, security, and blessing of a truly God-first life.
