In Luke 12:16–34, Jesus tells the story of a rich farmer whose land brought forth an abundant harvest. Instead of seeing his blessing as an opportunity to help others or invest in God’s work, he decided to tear down his barns and build bigger ones. His entire life was centered on himself — his plans, his comfort, his future. God called him a fool, not because he had wealth, but because he trusted in his possessions more than in the Lord. Jesus used this moment to expose the danger of covetousness and to remind us that true value does not come from what we own, but from who we are in God’s eyes. A man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions; it consists in his relationship with God.

Jesus then turned to His disciples and taught them about worry, faith, and the priorities of the Kingdom. He pointed to the ravens and the lilies—simple parts of creation that God faithfully cares for every day. If God feeds the birds and clothes the fields, He will certainly meet the needs of His children. Worry only reveals a lack of faith; faith, on the other hand, frees us to trust God fully and to use our resources for eternal purposes. Instead of chasing the things the world values, Jesus calls us to seek first the Kingdom of God, knowing that everything else will be added in God’s perfect timing. Our treasure shows where our heart truly rests—and the greatest investment we can make is in the things of eternity.
