Genesis 3:5 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. — Genesis 3:5

Satan now attacks the motives and character of God. He suggests that God is holding something back.

In other words, Satan says, “God knows that if you eat this fruit, you will have more. Your eyes will be opened. You will be as gods. God is restricting you. God does not want you to enjoy life.”

That is still one of Satan’s great lies. He wants people to believe obedience to God is bondage and sin is freedom. But the opposite is true. Sin is bondage. Obedience to God is freedom.

Psalm 84:11 says, “For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.”

God does not hold back good from His people. He protects them from sin and from themselves.

When God told Israel not to eat certain foods, such as pork or shellfish, it was not because He was trying to ruin their lives. He was protecting them. God knew what would harm them. His commands were acts of wisdom and care.

Satan’s lie in Genesis 3:5 is also the same old lie that appears in false religion: “Ye shall be as gods.” The desire to be our own god, our own authority, our own boss, and live without accountability is at the root of much sin.

Adam and Eve had free will. They had the ability to choose. That is part of genuine love. Forced obedience is not love. Jesus said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Love chooses to obey.
