The Two Advents of Jesus Christ

December 22, 2024

Book: 1 Peter

Scripture: 1 Peter 1:10–13

This sermon explores the two Advents of Jesus—His first coming, celebrated at Christmas, and His second coming, which is still to come. The term “Advent” refers to the “arrival” or “coming,” and these two events have significant implications for Christian theology.

The first Advent, marked by Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, was a humble and miraculous event, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies and marking the beginning of God’s plan for salvation. Jesus came to bring salvation through His death, establishing a spiritual kingdom in the hearts of believers. His first coming was a demonstration of humility, as He was born in lowly circumstances and lived as a servant.

The second Advent, however, will be vastly different.

Jesus will return in glory, visible to all, to bring final judgment and establish His eternal kingdom. This event will be marked by power and majesty, as Jesus comes to separate the righteous from the unrighteous and to reign for 1,000 years.

The sermon emphasizes the importance of living between these two Advents, urging believers to accept the gift of salvation, spread the gospel, and be ready for Christ’s return. Believers are called to live holy and faithful lives, with the hope of Christ’s second coming as a source of encouragement in a dark world.

Ultimately, the message encourages Christians to remain hopeful and anticipate the fulfillment of God’s promises at Christ’s return.
