“Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God…” (Ephesians 6:10–11)
The Christian life is not a parade; it’s a battle. Paul tells us to stand—not in our strength, but in the Lord’s—because our enemy is spiritual, cunning, and relentless. Truth buckles our lives together, righteousness guards the heart, and the gospel gives us sure footing. Then Paul says, “Above all… take the shield of faith”—the piece that covers everything else and helps us hold the line.
The word Paul uses for “shield” points to a large, door-shaped shield—big enough to cover the whole person. Ancient soldiers faced fiery darts—arrows wrapped in pitch and set aflame. Their shields were often wood covered in leather and soaked, so the flame was quenched on impact. Faith works the same way. The devil’s missiles—temptation, fear, doubt, accusation, distraction—ignite what’s already smoldering in our hearts. But faith in God’s character and Wordsnuffs them out before they spread.
Practically, when a fiery thought hits: Stop (don’t feed it), Name it (confess it as Scripture names it), Replace it (speak God’s promise), Pray it (ask for help now), and Tell a trusted believer if it lingers. Keep your shield wet with regular Scripture, prayer, worship, and fellowship—so sparks die fast.
Roman soldiers locked their shields edge-to-edge to form a wall. We need that too. Church isn’t a crowd; it’s a phalanx. When we stand shoulder-to-shoulder—truthful, righteous, gospel-ready, and faith-held—we become, by God’s might, an impenetrable front.
“Above all, taking the shield of faith…” Today, take it up. Believe what God says over what you feel, fear, or face. Quench the darts. Guard your heart. Advance with the gospel. And when the day is evil and the dust settles, having done all—stand.
