Psalms 46:4 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. — Psalms 46:4

Stanza Two - Verses 4-7

God Is Our Refuge in the City

Verse 4

The contrast is intentional and stunning. In verses 2-3, we had roaring, troubled seas - chaos, instability, destruction. Now suddenly: a river. Quiet. Steady. Life-giving.

Jerusalem had no natural river running through it - unlike Babylon with the Euphrates, or Egypt with the Nile. Those great empires boasted of their rivers as symbols of power and security. Jerusalem had only a small spring, Gihon. So this river is not geographic. It is theological. It points to the presence of God Himself as the source of life and gladness in the city. Ezekiel will later see this river in his great vision (Ezekiel 47), flowing from the temple outward, bringing life wherever it goes. John sees it again in Revelation 22.

The point is this: while the nations are undone by roaring seas, God's people are sustained by a quiet, steady river - the river of His presence.
