Philippians 3:6 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. — Philippians 3:6

Paul continues his résumé by speaking of zeal. He was not casual about religion. He was fervent, intense, and sincere. In fact, his zeal was so strong that he persecuted the church. He believed he was defending the truth, even while he was fighting against Christ.

Then he says that concerning the righteousness which is in the law, he was blameless. This does not mean he was sinless or perfect. It means that outwardly, according to the visible standards and requirements of the law, no one could point to a failure. He had a spotless religious reputation before men.

But all of this shows the danger of outward religion. A man can look right on the outside and still be spiritually dead on the inside.
