And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith; — Philippians 1:25
Paul now expresses confidence that he will remain for a while longer. He believes God will allow him to continue because there is still work to be done in the lives of these believers.
He says that his remaining will be for your furtherance and joy of faith. The word furtherance is the same idea used earlier in Philippians 1:12 concerning the furtherance of the Gospel. Here it speaks of the advancement and progress of their faith. Paul wanted them moving forward spiritually, not standing still. He wanted them to mature, deepen, and grow in Christ.
And this progress of faith would produce joy. Faith and joy go together. Romans 15:13 says, “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing.” As believers grow in trusting God, they grow in joy. Weak faith often leads to unstable hearts, but strengthened faith produces settled joy.
Paul’s ministry was never merely informational. He was not trying simply to give them facts. He wanted their faith advanced and their joy increased in God.
