This is the heart of the passage.
The Old Testament commanded people to love their neighbour as themselves (Leviticus 19:18).
But Jesus now raises the standard higher.
The command is no longer: “Love others the way you love yourself.”
Now it becomes: “Love others the way I have loved you.”
This is agápe love.
It is:
Jesus had just washed their feet. Within hours He would go to the cross. He was not merely teaching love-He was demonstrating it.
This kind of love transforms marriages, homes, churches, and relationships because it shifts the focus away from self and places it upon Christ.
The world teaches love based on feelings.
Jesus teaches love based on sacrifice (Romans 5:8, Ephesians 5:2, 1 John 4:10-11).
