Verse 6 explains how the ground was watered before rain is mentioned in Scripture. The Bible says that a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground.
This shows us the wisdom and design of God. God created a perfect, planned-out world. Before rain came upon the earth, God had already provided a way to water His creation. It was like an in-ground sprinkler system created by God Himself.
The earth was not neglected. It was not incomplete. God had made provision for what He created.
This also connects with what we later read in the account of the flood. Genesis 7:11 says: “In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.”
In Genesis 2, water comes up from the earth to sustain creation. In Genesis 7, the fountains of the great deep are broken up in judgment. The same God who designed the systems of the earth also rules over them.
Verse 6 reminds us that creation was orderly, sustained, and perfectly supplied by God.
