Genesis 2:5 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. — Genesis 2:5

Genesis 1 gives us the overview of creation, but Genesis 2 begins to take us deeper into the details. Verse 5 speaks about the specifics of God’s creation. God created everything - from the vast universe above us to the tiny plants beneath our feet. Nothing came into existence by accident. Every plant, every herb, every living thing came from the hand of God.

The Bible says in Colossians 1:16, “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:”

That verse helps us understand Genesis 2:5. All things were created by Him. The things we can see and the things we cannot see were made by God and for God. The plants did not grow because of chance. The earth did not produce life on its own. God created it all and prepared it for life, growth, and reproduction.

Verse 5 also says, “there was not a man to till the ground.” That phrase is important because it shows us something about God’s purpose for man. Man was not created to loaf around. Man was created with responsibility. Work was part of God’s plan before sin entered the world.

Sometimes people think work is part of the curse, but that is not true. Work itself is good. The fall made work harder, more frustrating, and more painful, but work existed before the fall. Adam was created to serve, tend, cultivate, and steward what God had made.

Paul later addressed the danger of refusing to work in 2 Thessalonians 3:11-13: “For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.
Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.”

Paul said those who refused to work were walking disorderly. Instead of being productive, they became busybodies. God’s design for man includes honest work, responsibility, and faithfulness. Even in a perfect garden, man had a task.
