Genesis 2:2 | Pastor Burns' Study Notes

And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. — Genesis 2:2

On the seventh day, God ended His work. This does not mean God became weary or needed to recover strength. Isaiah 40:28 says, “the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary.”God rested because His creative work was complete.

His rest was the rest of completion, not exhaustion. He stopped creating because everything He intended to make had been made. Genesis 1:31 says, “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.”

This is an important truth. God’s creation was not broken when He made it. It was very good. Sin had not yet entered. Death had not yet touched the world. Shame had not yet entered the heart of man. Everything reflected the goodness, wisdom, and glory of God.

There is also a spiritual picture here. God’s finished work in creation points us to the finished work of Christ in redemption. When Jesus died on the cross, He cried, “It is finished” in John 19:30. Just as God rested when creation was complete, the believer rests in the completed work of Christ. We do not work to earn salvation. We rest by faith in what Jesus has already done.
